Depth of Field Explained

The part of the photo that is really clear and sharp, that’s depth of field. The subject you’re taking a picture of is your focus point but the front of that focus and back also have to be sharp to have a good depth of field. Aperture and how far you are to your subject will determine the kind of depth of field you have. There are two types of depth of field, narrow and deep depth of field. If you’re taking a landscape, a deep depth of field would have the front and back part of the focus point also sharp. However for a narrow depth of field the background becomes blurry making the subject a better focus point, this technique is best for portraits.

There are different components to get a narrow or deep depth of field, such as aperture, focal length, and distance. Aperture is how the big the lens is and how much light enters the camera, the bigger the aperture the shallower the picture will be. Also being super close will also make the depth of field shallow. Lastly the focal length, to get a shallow picture the focal length has to be wide.
